Hello, horsey! Very excited about this extremely rare vintage hand-carved and painted Baga horse chair from Western Africa.

Senufo stools are chic, but we’ve all seen a few…hundred, which is why I’m so stoked on this Baga chair that is handmade from one piece of wood. The horse gives it an air of prestige since horses were a means of transportation, and therefore strength and power.

The name Baga is derived from the Susu phrase ‘bae raka,’ meaning ‘people of the seaside.’ Baga people reside primarily in the swampy coastal region of Guinea.

Please note there is a crack running through the horse’s belly, so I don’t recommend using as a chair for an adult, though it would certainly support the weight of a small child and works very well as a decorative stool.
