Skylining and Veterans Day

Champagne, pain au chocolat and parkour — all fantastic, Francophilia-inspiring inventions. Joining that list: skylining.

Hat tip Very Short List, the most worthwhile of all the daily email services.

Have you ever heard of skylining—a European sport that combines elements of mountain climbing, slacklining, and BASE jumping? Neither had we. And then we saw the trailer for Sebastien Montaz-Rosset’s new film, I Believe I Can Fly.

Since it’s Veterans Armistice Day, I’m thinking of my late brother-in-law, Staff Sergeant Justin Bauer, as I watch this documentary. And since Justin frequently jumped out of planes as part of his job with the 82nd Airborne Division, I imagine he would have loved skylining or highlining or whatever you want to call this hybrid sport. Unlike me, he’d probably just go do it instead of writing about it.

And with that, thank you, veterans, for your service. While there’s no skydiving, skylining or otherwise life endangering activities in my immediate future, I’ll be thinking of you and channeling your bravery when I quickly descend a few stories along the Bowery this afternoon.
